The digital publication, developed by Eurostat, provides easily understandable statistics on several ICT-related topics and presents them using texts, interactive data visualisations and an animation. It aims to provide answers to some common questions, for example, about internet use, but also covers some more specific and less known aspects such as digital skills and e-sales.

This publication is divided into 4 chapters:

  1. Chapter 1 Profile of the digital society & businesses focuses on how and for which purposes people and businesses go online, on digital skills and ICT specialists. It includes, among others, information on mobile internet access, internet activities, use of social media as well as the employment of ICT specialists.
  2. Chapter 2 E-commerce looks in detail at e-commerce from two perspectives: people ordering goods and services online and businesses selling electronically.
  3. Chapter 3 Internet security & the cloud provides information about aspects related to privacy and the protection of personal information online, ICT security policies of businesses as well as about private and business use of cloud services.
  4. Chapter 4 What is the digital single market about? gives some background information about the content and goals of the EU policy concerning the creation of the digital single market which is one of the ten political priorities of the European Commission.

Economic, social and territorial cohesion are key objectives of the European Union giving every EU region a fair chance to actively participating in the European Union. In recent decades Cohesion Policy played an important role in accompanying the completion of the Single Market, the establishment of the European Monetary Union, and in supporting EU enlargement. The European Structural and Investment Funds are the most visible EU instruments at local and regional level, demonstrating the benefits of European Union to its citizens. Therefore, the future of cohesion policy is closely linked to the debate on the future of the European Union, particularly since the European Commission itself has recently expressed doubts about the added value and the future role of cohesion policy at EU level.

Following the adoption of the CoR Opinion on "The Future of Cohesion Policy beyond 2020" at the CoR Plenary  of 11-12 May 2017 and in view of the upcoming 7th Cohesion Forum at the end of June, it is important to address some of the criticisms recently raised. This is why the European Committee of the Regions is organising, in close collaboration with leading territorial associations, a high level conference on an "Alliance on the future of Cohesion Policy in the EU", in order to send a strong message of support for cohesion policy beyond 2020.

The event, which will take place on 18 May 2017 from 9.00 to 12.30 at the European Committee of the Regions in Brussels, will bring together leading representatives from the European institutions, Member States, cities and regions as well as territorial associations.

  • Medio ambiente, agricultura y desarrollo rural
  • Salud

Preparations for the work programme 2018-2020 began in 2016 with stakeholder consultations and discussions with Member States on priorities, which have been outlined in informal working documents, namely 17 thematic scoping papers and one overarching document. The adoption and publication of the work programme are expected in October 2017.

Each thematic section organised the stakeholder consultations in the way that is best suited to the respective subject and the respective target groups.

Work has included open public consultations via 'Your Voice in Europe' in areas where also citizens could directly contribute (Societal challenge 'Food' and 'Science with and for society') as well as open consultations using other platforms for ICT related issues.

Dedicated written consultations targeted at respective stakeholder groups, European networks and international bodies as well as several specific events were organised.

The results of recent stakeholder consultations on related policy initiatives (e.g. Digital Single Market, Energy Union, 'call for ideas' for the European Innovation Council etc.) were also taken into account.

More section-oriented information on the consultations and the preparation of the current and the next work programmes can be found for the following topics:
